හින්දු ධර්මයේ ශීතලා මාතාව රෝගයන් සන්සුන් කරමින් සෞඛ්යය ලබාදෙන දේවියක් ලෙස සැලකේ. “ශීතලා” යන වචනයේ අර්ථය “සිසිල් කිරීම” යන්නයි. එනම් ශරීරයේත් මනසේත් උෂ්ණත්වය (තාපය) සන්සුන් කරන ශක්තියක් ලෙස ඇය සැලකේ.
ආගමික විශ්වාසයන් අනුව, ශීතලා මාතාව ආදි ශක්තියේ දයාබර ස්වරූපයක් ලෙස සැලකේ. ලෝකයේ රෝගයන් තම පාලනය යටතේ තබාගෙන, භක්තිකයන්ට සෞඛ්යය හා ශාන්තිය ලබාදෙන ස්වරූපයක් ලෙස හැඳින්වෙන අතර ඇගේ අතෙහි සාමාන්යයෙන් ඉලපතක් වැනි කොස්සක්, කලශයක් , පවන් ගසන අවානක්, සහ කොහොඹ කොළ ඇත. මේවා රෝග නාශනය සහ පවිත්රතාවය නිරූපණය කරන ලකුණු ලෙස සැලකේ. ඇගේ වාහනය බූරුවෙක් වන අතර බොහෝවිට ඇය පද්මයක මත වාඩි වී සිටින ලෙස නිරූපණය කරයි.
